On the BMW G8X M3 and M4, as well as the G87 M2, the oil cooler is mounted at the lowest point beneath the front of the vehicle and sits nearly parallel to the road. This position allows for effective cooling, but it also leaves the oil cooler highly exposed to rocks, road debris, uneven pavement, scrapes, and other impacts.

From the factory, the oil cooler is left largely open underneath the vehicle, with only lightweight plastic protection surrounding the area. This provides minimal defense against direct impacts. A rock or piece of road debris can puncture the oil cooler, potentially causing rapid oil loss, expensive repairs, and leaving the vehicle unable to be safely driven.

The NRP Aluminum Skid Plate replaces the vulnerable factory protection with a strong, direct-fit aluminum shield. It mounts securely to the subframe for increased strength while retaining the factory air dam and the airflow required for proper oil cooler performance.
